New Gym for Roanoke City’s Hurt Park Elementary School
Roanoke City held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Hurt Park Elementary School’s new gymnasium.
Hughes Associates partnered with Avis Construction to provide Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) with a new gymnasium for Hurt Park Elementary School.
RCPS originally requested a “sprung structure” for their new gymnasium due to budget restraints; however, our team envisioned a more durable gymnasium while remaining within RCPS budget. Avis Construction worked to develop a plan that would allow the school to construct a pre-engineered metal building that would better suit the needs of the students and the surrounding community. The gym is the latest development in the continued equity plan for all RCPS elementary schools to have at least two of the following three: cafeteria, gymnasium, and multipurpose room.
“Behind me today is really the embodiment of the right thing for children and it’s also the equity plan,” Superintendent Rita Bishop said on Wednesday.
The gym includes dimmable LED lighting, skylights, two restrooms, and a full-length basketball court.
The students will use the gym in its current state for the remainder of the year. Final touches, including installing basketball goals and floor, will happen during summer break.
