Hughes Associates A&E was commissioned to provide complete programming, space planning, and preliminary elevations for a 25,000 square foot headquarters station for the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. Work also included civil engineering and design improvements to the 3-acre site required for a conditional use permit in the heart of Blacksburg, a few blocks from the Virginia Tech campus. Our team including nationally-recognized public safety consultant, Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects, conducted extensive interviews with town and squad staff to determine their needs and desires for a modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing facility that would fit comfortably with the adjacent single family neighborhood. The design solution incorporates both small and large scale design elements, along with details that reduce the mass of the building to a human scale. We also worked closely with town staff to satisfy concerns of neighbors and successfully guide the project through the rezoning process. Construction will be completed under a PPEA contract.
