Johnston Chapel Baptist Church has relied on Hughes Associates A&E’s expertise in church design for the past two decades. This church shares its facility with Mercer Academy, a private religious school. Accommodating both parishioners and students creates a unique challenge in code differences, visual environment and circulation needs.
Our first project provided additional classroom space for both the school and Sunday worshippers. This addition, designed as a quarter circle, improved the connections between a dead end classroom wing and the central core. An unfinished lower level space was converted to a youth suite activity floor. The classrooms accommodate both the education needs and a worshipful Sunday school experience.
A long-range master plan was developed to provide sanctuary expansion, improved entrances, and elevator service to all floors with an expanded commons entrance, functional reception area, library, and welcome center. Johnston Chapel has followed the master plan proposal to accommodate their future growth and ministry vision.
Our most recent work for Johnston Chapel was a renovation project for the existing education wing which provided pre-school and nursery space, a separated functional administrative area, and more toilets. An addition expanded the existing entrance into a commons area where the congregation meets as a community. This space also includes a larger library, information center and conference space. The building infrastructure and maintenance issues have been addressed during each renovation project.
