Hughes Associates A&E developed a design for a new medical office building for Carilion’s Community Hospital Campus. Our design met the challenge of a small site by maximizing building size and function while maintaining adequate parking for both medical offices and the adjacent hospital. The exterior was designed to complement the existing hospital, yet achieve a unique individual identity for these independent medical practices.
The first floor houses Physicians to Children and includes 30 exam rooms with space for 12 attending doctors in 15,500 square feet. Separate sick and well baby waiting rooms and check-in stations promote patient health and safety. Treatment and exam areas are designed as pods, each with its own nurses station in order to improve work flow efficiency.
The space for Physicians to Women, located in the upper level of the building, includes 39 exam rooms, 10 consult rooms, and a mammography suite. Multiple nurses stations and waiting areas serve each 6-room exam module in this 17,000 sf facility. As one patient remarked, “I know it’s a large practice, but I feel like I have a one-on-one relationship with my doctor because of the intimate, private waiting room and spaces.”
