Teaming up with a local general contractor, Hughes Associates A&E used the owner’s conceptual sketch as a basis for construction documents for a new 27,000 square foot church on a vacant site. The project included 500 feet of access road from Red Lane Extension, a paved parking lot with spaces for 231 vehicles, stormwater structures, and a detention pond. The layout required a creative parking design in order to maximize usage of available land. Since water and sanitary sewer were not available, we worked with Roanoke County and City of Salem to extend the municipal utilities to the site.
A deep ravine cut through the middle of the site, which required a creative grading design to prepare for ultimate site build-out. Our efficient design balanced the cut and fill to save the church money. This required excavating along a ridge to depths of 15 feet near the middle of the site; creating slopes along the site’s northern and western property lines, and filling in the ravine.
